Saw Pirates last night at the El Capitan, hells yes. :D It's so worth paying quadruple the price for the tickets there, because the seats were really good, we got free snacks, and all the cosplayers and decorations and the organ player were just awesome. :D Wish I could've won one of the prizes, though. I really could've used that Nintendo DS Lite. And the theater wasn't far from my school, so I totally found the freeway again with little hassle. Go me!
And now, my SPOILERY THOUGHTS.
- As far as third movies in a (maybe?) trilogy go, I liked this one better than Shrek 3 or Spiderman 3. Maybe it was because the audience I was seeing it with was more responsive and enthused, but I just had more fun watching it and it was less predictable than those others. Honestly, most of what happened, I didn't see coming (except for Tia Dalma being Davy Jones's woman, durr).
- On that note...Tia Dalma is a random sea goddess? WTF? I kinda wished they'd set up the whole Calypso thing a movie or two earlier, 'cause it just felt kinda out of the blue and then she gets REALLY REALLY BIG and turns into crabs and then a whirlpool. D: That's it? O-okay?... Although I guess that does help explain how she knew Will's name and could bring Barbosa back from the dead and all that.
- The whole Davy Jones's locker bit was kind of trippy and awesome. SHIRTLESS JACK YEY. Even though often I really could not follow just what was supposed to be going on in Jack's brain. THEY JUST WANTED TO PUT IN ENOUGH JACKS FOR ALL THE FANGIRLS, ADMIT IT.
- I want a rock crab.IT WAS A ROCK LOBSTERRRRRR
- Governor Swann, no! D: (Is it bad that "I think I'm dead" kinda made me chuckle?) Although that scene was kinda awesome, too. As was the rocking-the-ship scene.
- Aww, poor Kraken. D:
- I-I don't know what to think about Elizabeth, now. I mean, Liz is an awesome character and all. But I guess here she was almost...too awesome?! I mean, she's frickin' kicking ass left and right as good as Will and Jack are, and then is all I SHALL LEAD THE PIRATES AS THE NEW PIRATE KING (poor Chao!) and then is just kind of King of the Pirates now? I dunno, I guess I just liked how Liz was able to be so awesome in the first movie without being this savvy swordfighter, just by stabbing pirate captains with butter knives or threatening to toss medallions overboard. Dammit movie, she doesn't need to be made Pirate King in order to get what she wants!
- That said, I'm really glad they didn't decide to call her the Pirate Queen.
- Could we please have a flow chart for who is betraying who and to whom and why and when? Because damned if I could follow any of that most of the time.
- Speaking of that, WILL, WHAT. WHAT. Will, I did not understand your motivations most of the time! I mean, I know he wanted to free his father and etc., but WILL YOU DUMBASS.
- Yeah, he was dumb sometimes, but them getting married on the ship under Captain Barbosa while fighting off the soldiers and the Dutchmen kind of won the whole thing. That was terrific.
- OMG JAMES NOOOOOOO :((( Just when you getting over your whole stint and ready to go back to Scruffington, they killed you! I weep! (But hey, at least he was totally honorable about it.)
- Fight at the end of the movie was awesome, natch.
- WILL, WHAT. WHAT. (part 2). I know that whole thing was to have Jack redeem himself by saving Will and giving up his chance at immortality, but...Will! :( Way to kinda screw over Liz just so Bootstrap can be free, even though it would be obvious he wouldn't leave his son anyway?!
- So, by the end of the movie, we have our peoples as:
Tia Dalma = CRABS
Beckett = SPLINTER PINCUSION
Norrington = STABBITY
Governor Swann = DED
Davy Jones = DISNEY!FALLING!VILLAIN!DED
Barbosa = WINNAR
Pintel and Ragetti = STILL AWESOME
Gibbs = CHICKS
Bootstrap = NO MORE STARFISH OTP
Will = DAVY JONES 2.0
Liz = PIRATE KING
Jack = DINGHY CAPTAIN + MPD?
- And really, there was lots of serious stuff in it, but the seriousness actually made all of the funny parts even funnier. It wasn't like Shrek 3, which was mostly lots of disconnected funny with some angst, or Spiderman 3, which was lots of disconnected angst with some funny. It had the right amount of funny and action. For that, I applaud it! Go see it!
- Oh, and BTW: two of the stars showed up at the theater, one of which was Marty. :D And I was in the front row, two feet away from him. :D So awesome. :DDDD
