This was supposed to be posted about a week ago, but I just now got around to finishing it, so here it is!
Gameplay:
Goes without saying that the gameplay mechanics were way improved in this game. The camera was tons better; there was no getting stuck behind walls. I almost never had to reach for the right stick for camera adjustment. However, lock-on was not quite as useful, since it made me dizzy at times if the bad guy did a lot of jumping around.
The new battle tactics were so much fun. I loved using every one of the drive modes. I wasn't too sure about getting Antiform, but the few times I did get it, I squeed with awesome and let Sora go to town. Dayam, that was fun. Final Form was also all kinds of crazy, although at times it was hard to control.
And naturally, the limit moves were extremely useful and looked kickass. Simba's limit move was especially useful since drives weren't available there. I never was able to find Jack Sparrow's limit move, though, but I think I know where I missed it at least! D: Oh, and the MP charge = love. That was one of the most useful features in the whole game.
The gummi ship? Still a pain in the ass. Only instead of just holding down x and steering a little, you're mashing x and dodge-rolling and steering for dear life. So at least it wasn't a boring pain in the ass!
The beginning:
The beginning of the game was really surreal, almost creepy, compared to the vast majority of the game. The Lain-esque cutscenes and static transitions were a part of that, although the "Seven Wonders of Twilight Town" was also a little unsettling. It was almost like playing an entirely different game, especially with the absence of Disney characters. But by the time you get to the end, you realize why such a long introduction was necessary. I don't think there would have been nearly as much audience sympathy for Roxas and the choices he made without getting to see the (fake) life and friends he was forced to give up.
Worlds:
Eeee! I don't know if there were any worlds this time that I really didn't like (such as Monstro). Mulan's world was great fun, especially since I love the movie. Beast's castle was also great, and they did an awesome job of rendering Beast and Belle this time. The Heartless boss battle in Beast's castle was kickass. The Underworld was a bit of a pain to get around, but that was hardly noticed because of AURON! <3 The voice, the fwooshing, the limit moves, his story...all of Auron was a million kinds of sexy! And the scene of him during the credits where he dissolves into pyreflies = CRY!
Kinda wish Disney Castle was a bit more explorable, but Timeless River was definitely one of my all-time favorite worlds. Oldschool!Sora was beyond adorable, and I loved how they made it sound like a bad film projector in the background. Steamboat Willie PWNS!
Atlantica was practically all cutscenes anyway, so it's not like getting around was a huge problem. I sucked at the singing games, though. It wasn't like DDR with an easy beat to follow and time; it'd probably go better after actually memorizing the pattern. But singingfish!Sora was still one of the most cute and silly things around. Haley Joel Osmet definitely had guts.
Pirates of the Caribbean world = OMGYAY. I really wish they'd been able to get the original VAs, but eh, what can you do. They did a good job, all things considered. Most of the first trip to Port Royal was taken straight from the movie, anyway. Sora wanting to be a pirate was, once again, adorable. The second boss battle against the ghost Heartless was a pit of a pain, since it took me awhile to figure out that you couldn't actually hurt the dang thing unless all of the Aztec gold was back in the chest.
Didn't really enjoy Agrabah as much this time, although I did like how they made the city more sprawling. The Jafar boss battles were a pain in the ass because they were nearly all solving puzzles. While flying on a carpet. And being attacked. D:
Halloween Town was fun, if for no other reason than Sora getting all excited about seeing Santa. Cuteness attack again! Boss battle against Oogie Boogie was a huge pain; again, not surprising. The story seemed a little weird, though...guess Sora and co. come into the story after Jack has already tried tosteal borrow Christmas?
I loooooved the Lion King world. I would buy a million plushies of Lion!Sora if they ever sold them. I really didn't get how frickin' huge the world was until fuzzy lil' Sora was actually leaping across it. The second part of the world felt like it could've been really interesting if it were handled better. And woah, Simba and Nala moved pretty fast on the whole making cubs deal!
And the Tron world was MUCH love. Everything being shiny was cute (even the Keyblades got shiny!), Tron being ticklish was cuter, and Sora + computers of any kind = cutest. If it doesn't work, bang on the keyboard! XD
And a very random story while in the middle of the Tron world:
Leon: It's just a few keystrokes away.
Me: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Roommates: D: What?! What's wrong?
Me: NOTHING! NOTHING AT ALL! BACK TO YOUR LIVES, CITIZENS!
The Winnie the Pooh world was not nearly as annoying this time around, although I still had issues with the cave maze puzzle. Even considering the fact that I hated the 100 Acre Wood last time, I'm glad they took the time to show Sora being excited and concerned for his friends there, since it made it feel more like part of the plot and less like just another sidequest.
Characters:
I thought Sora would just get more serious, but instead he just got about 10x cuter. Every time he came onscreen or opened his mouth I just wanted to up and hug him and give him cookies. I loved that they played up his cocky sense of humor too, while at the same time keeping his dorkiness and endearing optimism. How can you not love him?! And for that matter, how can you character-rape him and not feel awful about it? Sora is not a whining, unmotivated little lump of uke! /canonrage
And Donald and Goofy kicked even more ass this time! Just their friendship with Sora is still one of my favorite parts of the game, and I hate how fanthings often downplay it or ignore it. The scene were Goofy's thought to be dead after an enormous rock konks him on the head? I knew he wasn't actually dead (because come on, this is Disney), but I was still going OMFG YOU CAN'T KILL GOOFY YOU BASTARDS just because Sora was so upset.
Speaking of... Mickey. Kicked. Ass. I was fascinated with him and his interaction with Riku in CoM, but KH2 just sent my love of him through the roof. Like when they do think Goofy's dead and Mickey just gets a BITCHES'RE GOIN' DOWN look and goes off to PWN ALL? Awesomeness. I love seeing the traditional characters escape from the confines of expensive sweatshirts found at Disneyland and become real and complex characters...while still keeping their personalities!
Although is it just me, or was Goofy more often than not the smartest one in the whole trio? o_O
Woohoo, Maleficent got to come back! And her actually helping Sora and co. after the battle in the great maw = OMG. And yet, it still made some crazy amount of sense! I really didn't think I'd like Pete in this game, but he was just so hilarious every time he came on that I didn't mind him at all. And his voice was perfect. X3
The FF characters I'm a little iffy on. I wish they'd done better with Leon's voice (I miss you, David Boreanez!) and Aerith's felt a tad off to me. It was such fun getting to see Cloud in his Advent Children outfit, still emo-ing away. I wish they'd done better with Cid's voice, they made him sound like a hick. :P But Cid and Merlin fighting = LAWL. Tifa showing up was a little awkward, but completely worth it for nothing more than the "Have you seen a guy with spiky hair?" line. XD I did try fighting Sephiroth once, and thaaaat didn't end so well. Maybe I'll try again later.
The Organization:
Holy cow, they were a million kinds of awesome! I so wish there was more on them in the game, since there's so many unanswered questions with them. I literally screamed at some of the secret Ansem Reports (and am now trying to figure out what some of their true names could be...) Wish we'd gotten to see more of the CoM members!
I wasn't sure about Axel's voice first off, but I instantly fell in love with it, just because it's Axel and Axel is sexier than most everything. I can now see where the Axel/Roxas fans get all of their fodder. Eh, it's still kind of on the same level as Sora/Riku for me...definitely subtext, but I prefer to see it from the best-friendship angle. I think the fanbrats ruined me on that pairing again. :P Curse them! But nevertheless, I really wish they'd expanded on that relationship because it felt out of nowhere to me and I was mad-curious about it. And I was so sad when Axel died! DX Nooooes! I want him and his sexyness back...although I guess it was necessary in order for Xemnas to be the whole last-nobody-left thing.
Speaking of Xemnas...bastard screwing over everybody else much? Ansem (or as it were, Xehanort's Heartless self) was a pretty evil guy in the first game, but Xemnas was just BASTARDLY. Totally awesome villain, but I was glad to finally kick his ass.
The new Organization members were equally awesome. The Luxord boss battle was a little weird, but I loved his voice as well. Xigbar practically KILLED ME DED, but again, fun voice acting. And Saix was just...creepy. Creepy and interesting. I <3 Xaldin to pieces because he is also sexy with his SIDEBURNS OF DOOM. I even didn't think I'd like Demyx, but he totally grew on me. He was so dorky and reluctant and just wanted to play his sitar! ^^ (Although the reaction command "Show stealer" during the last Demyx boss battle made me laugh so hard).
In short, there must needs be more Organization, because they are cooler than your mom.
The Ending:
Hoooly frelling cow, I was screaming through most of the last world and the endgame about every five seconds, which made for some interesting explanations later. Kairi getting to kick ass with her own Keyblade made me squee like a mad (prophetic!) thing 'cause hey, she deserves to be awesome. Take that, Kairi-bashers! XP I suspected something was up with Riku (stupid spoilery guidebook), but I totally didn't guess that he had actually taken on Ansem's appearance all along! That scene where Sora finally finds out, and then Kairi is begging Riku not to leave...and then Sora's crying...arrgh, just about broke my heart! I <3 them all so much!
The scene where Roxas and Namine finally merge back with Sora and Kairi to become whole was really touching. With seeing how much Roxas really wanted his own life with his own friends, it was brave and self-sacrificing of him to give it up so that Sora could be complete. (Then again, with the alternative being a nasty end like the rest of the Organization, Roxas may have gotten off the lucky one...) And with the way Namine talked about them being together as long as Sora and Kairi were together, seemed to stick pretty strongly as Roxas/Namine being canon. (I just wish they'd established that more!) Nevertheless, I felt both really happy and sad at the same time for Roxas and Namine.
DiZ being Ansem? TOTALLY out of the blue for me, so I screamed. I probably should've guessed it earlier, especially after they showed the flashback with Ansem, Mickey and Xehanort, and you can totally tell how similar their voices are. (Like anyone should be able to miss Christopher Lee!) The whole conversation about containing hearts and what is right between Ansem and Mickey was really interesting, furthering my love of Mickey and my interest on how the whole mess went down with Ansem and his six apprentices. (The fic ideas, they do not leave me aloooone! XO) The whole wee-the-exploding-machine-made-Riku-turn-back-into-Riku!thing was a tad bit contrived, but hey, it's not like I'm complaining! :D And getting to fight with Riku in your party was a million kinds of kickass.
The last boss battle certainly wasn't a breeze like it was in KH1, even at level 60-odd and with the Ultimaweapon (which was thankfully not as much of a pain to get this time!) I wanted to smackdown Xemnas a million kinds of hurt for the ways he tried to manipulate Sora and Riku, especially Riku (since he'd be the one more likely to be manipulated at that point). The final battle with a thousand-and-one reaction reversals was crazy, having to get Riku all the way over to Xemnas to save Sora was even harder, and the final move where you have to deflect an endless amount of lightsaber-bolts officially killed my thumbs dead.
But the payoff! Gahhh! The ending movie was so many different kinds of love I can barely grasp it. Sora and Riku were all set up to just live in the realm of darkness and had fully accepted it, but then they were still able to go home and were just SO HAPPY! And love all around for Goofy and Donald tackle-glomping Sora and Riku being all happy to see Mickey! *points to uh-ohs spoilery icon* And SoKai love yaaays! Sooooo much happiness it makes me explode!
Naturally, they still left it open for sequels, especially with Sora, Riku and Kairi getting a mysterious message from the King that we never get to see. Damned if Disney and Square aren't going to milk a franchise until it's bone-dry! But hey, if they're able to make KH3 just as good as they did KH2, there's certainly no complaints from me. XD
Although...the secret movie makes me wonder what in the HELL would happen. The hey? Three mysterious armored warriors in a field full of Keyblades? And the ones they pick up are Riku's, Sora's and Kairi's? (Or else Riku's, Sora's and Mickey's; it's hard to tell in that scene and the only one I really recognize is Riku's Keyblade). It seems the next one would be a lot more heavy-handed then the previous two games. (Then again, I guess seeing Deep Dive for the first time after KH1 would put the Disney-ness in question, too). It was suggested that the next game would instead be in the past, about the first Keyblade bearer, with perhaps only a bit of continuation on Sora's story. I think this makes sense, especially since there was talk in the secret movie about the original Keyblade legends, and a "Keyblade War." Until then, we'll just go STARK RAVING MAAAD!
I'd be perfectly dang happy if they ended the series right here, though. This game was soooo much love love love LOVE it boggles my brain. It's like the game designers listened to what all of the fans wanted, and then added in even MORE goodness just because they're crazy like that. All must share in the love! *spreads KH2 love everywhere and is a happy thing!*
KH2 progress: COMPLETE!
Operator status: Kinda busy this early morning. :P
Drawing: More concept art for Bob, which I was still really struggling over. I also finished toning the four pitch pages, hooray! I still need to do a few more things before I can send everything away, and I'm starting to get nervous about it. Also, I want to start work for ANOTHER pitch as soon as I'm done just so I can throw more than one idea at peoples' heads and show I'm not just a one-hit wonder. Fanarts and other junk may also gnaw on my brain on occasion.
Writing: Finished the rough draft of my final article! It sucks, but whatever. Also have two chapters done of my novel...need to do the last one, plus that short story. And as would be expected, a million and one fic ideas have attacked my brain after KH2, some of which will be posted later!
Gameplay:
Goes without saying that the gameplay mechanics were way improved in this game. The camera was tons better; there was no getting stuck behind walls.
