So, awhile back I got challenged to write a crossover fic with little bitty!Terra and Chibiterasu. Just them being adorable and bitty together. I had to accept the challenge. @_@ This ended up a bit longer than I expected, but still, I finally finished it! So, here is a crossover of small adorable things that kick ass.
This is unbeta'd, so please forgive any mistakes (or just point them out to me in comments so I can fix them). And enjoy bitties!
Terra never really liked being left behind when Master Eraqus had to visit another world, but right now he felt particularly frustrated. Why, he wasn't sure...maybe it was because he had only just recently gotten his Keyblade, and wanted to use it in a "real setting." Maybe it was because he'd been on this world for over a year now, and was starting to crave seeing a new place. Whatever it was, he was more persistent than usual as Eraqus prepared to leave.
"Please, Master? Can I come? I'll do everything you tell me, promise!" he begged.
But Eraqus would not be swayed. "You are not ready to leave this world yet, Terra. Have patience."
Terra watched in awe as his Master activated his armor and summoned his glider. Watching these now just made him want them even more. Eraqus glanced back at him as his glider skirted along the grass. "I am just going to go see Master Yen Sid. Go and play with Aqua, and I'll be back before you even realize it."
He responded with a sullen "Okay," but couldn't hide the small frown. If he told his wishes to Aqua, she'd just say they had to listen to the Master. Which Terra wanted to do, but he also wanted to travel with him to other worlds! He had a Keyblade now, and he wanted to show it to Master Yen Sid!
Master Eraqus nodded a farewell to him, and his glider zoomed into the open portal on the grass, leaving Terra behind in the courtyard. And in that instant, he was seized with a sudden impulse. He would follow his Master!
Terra didn't stop to think...barely even stopped to let the notion sink in. He just ran up and jumped into the swirling blue portal after Master Eraqus. And in the process, Terra accidentally jumped into an odd, nearly untraceable phenomenon, just at the moment the portal closed. A second earlier and he would have gone hurtling through interspace. A second later and he would have just landed on the courtyard grass. But he hit it at exactly the right moment between there and not-there...a moment where time and space were fudged, were possibility was limitless; the fraction of a second before an obvious choice is made. This moment of off-world portal flux could have sent him anywhere...into the past or the future, into endless darkness or into blinding light.
But Terra was lucky, and it merely dropped him into one of the millions of worlds spread throughout interspace.
He landed harshly on what felt like grass, and his first assumption was that he hadn't gotten through the portal and was still in the courtyard. But just looking up confirmed that this wasn't the case...it suddenly didn't look anything like the Land of Departure. It looked more like a vast forest, with moss-covered trees stretching into the sky. Mountains circled the forest, but they were free of the golden chains that bound the land together. All the trees seemed to grow out of bottomless lake. This place was wild and mysterious.
Terra's first thought was elation that he had made it to the other world. But that elation soon fell as he realized he was alone on this other world. This wasn't the place where Master Yen Sid really lived, was it?
"Master?" he called out, hoping that Eraqus was somewhere nearby.
But there was no answer except the wind and distant birds. Terra swallowed back the first wave of nervousness, and got to his feet. His Master had had to be somewhere close. He began slowly walking up the hill, looking everywhere for Eraqus. It didn't take long for him to realize that Eraqus wasn't here. He wasn't sure if anyone was here.
Any wonder he might have felt about seeing a new world was completely drowned out by the growing realization that he was alone in it. He couldn't get back home, because he didn't know how to use his Keyblade to open paths between the worlds. He wasn't even sure he could do that. And the Master and Aqua didn't know where he was, or even how he'd gotten here, so they couldn't go and look for him!
Terra's searching turned into a run, and then eventually slowed to a stop. He had reached the top of the hill overlooking the forest, only to reach a dead end. He faced what looked like a tunnel through the mountain, but it was blocked off with a pile of boulders. From here he could see most of the forest and lake, and they just made him feel smaller.
Terra felt like his insides were closing in, leaving no space between them. He was lost on an unknown world, with no conceivable way to get home, and it was his fault. If he'd just been patient, like the Master said, he wouldn't be here! The closing feeling got even worse, until it felt like it was inside and outside of him...something heavy, and cold...
And a moment later, he recognized that feeling. It was darkness. There was darkness nearby, strong darkness, and it was coming towards him!
Terra barely had time to call that brand-new Keyblade before the darkness manifested itself before him. It might have been a Heartless; Terra wasn't sure...it looked like a dark purple monkey without a tail, and with shining yellow eyes hidden behind a paper mask. The Heartless wielded a weapon he hadn't seen before; it almost looked like a fan. Terra stood and faced the menace, but his Keyblade suddenly felt heavy in his hands. He had never faced an actual enemy before, and certainly not alone! He didn't have any magic knowledge, either.
"I'm not scared of you!" Terra declared, although his voice and body language said otherwise. The Heartless didn't respond, and looked as if it were just considering this statement. Then, its mind made up, it lunged at him with the fan-weapon.
Terra skirted to the side and swung the Keyblade at his opponent. He managed to actually hit it, and with enough force to send it stumbling back. This just seemed to make it angry, however, and it leaped right over his head to strike him from behind.
Despite his fear, the skills ingrained from a year of training were enough to keep his responses quick. He spun and struck back with his Keyblade, hitting the Heartless in the leg. It hopped back on one foot, clawing at the air. Whether in actual pain or just frustration, Terra didn't know, but he wasn't going to give it the chance to try that again. Gathering a bit of courage, he lunged again, aiming for its chest. The Keyblade struck it hard, throwing the Heartless back. Yes, he had to do this! No matter what happened, he still had to prove he was a Keyblade Master.
He ran to deliver another blow, only to see the Heartless jump back to its feet. Terra charged anyway, throwing all of his momentum into the Keyblade's swing—
--Only to have it blocked by the fan. The clash felt to Terra as if he'd just struck a steel wall, and the force of it sent him hurtling backwards. The Keyblade went flying from his hands with a ringing, jolting sensation that seemed to travel up his arm. He landed with a cry in the dirt, and the Keyblade went spinning several feet away from him. Terra reached out towards it, but couldn't muster the strength in his heart to call it back.
He looked back up to see the Heartless looming over him, its weapon poised to strike. Terra could feel the darkness seeping over him, through the ground underneath him; into his own being. He raised his arms over his face, knowing it was futile, but thinking only that he wanted to protect himself from the inevitable. Only just arrived in a new world, and already he'd stumbled across danger he couldn't survive. He squeezed his eyes shut, wishing more than anything that he could see Aqua and the Master again...
But the death blow never came. Terra opened his eyes only to see the Heartless split in half across its middle, as if it had been cut with some invisible, impossibly sharp blade. The Heartless quivered for a bit, and then dissolved into thick purple smoke...and what looked like flowers?
Terra barely lifted his head as the Heartless dissipated into darkness; his heart still drumming with fear. There was no one else here, so who could have...
He shifted up on his elbows further, only to see there was someone else there...a large white puppy, about ten feet away from him. Terra just stared at it for a moment. How in the worlds did a puppy come out here? And without getting hurt by the Heartless?
While normally Terra would have been suspicious of any new arrival to this scene, he couldn't see how a puppy could be dangerous. And this still didn't explain what had killed the Heartless. Not that he was complaining about his life being saved, but it was a tad…weird.
Terra sat up, trying to calm his racing heart. The darkness drifted away from the scene of the battle, even as he felt a taste of it lingering somewhere inside him. The puppy just cocked its head at him, wagging its tail.
Well, at least he wasn't completely alone in this strange world. He reached out a hand towards the dog, trying to demonstrate that he wasn't a threat. "Hey there, little guy."
The puppy barked once and bounded up to him, startling Terra. As it came closer, something in the light seemed to shift, and Terra realized it wasn't just a white puppy...it had strange red markings across its face and sides, and something weird hovered over its back. It looked like a mirror, made of thick green metal, and enshrouded in fire that turned the mirror but didn't burn the puppy. What's more, with every step it took, flowers seemed to loom in its pawprints. It felt like the earth itself was warming with gladness the closer it came.
Terra was so entranced by this sight that he nearly fell over again when the puppy pounced on him. It was big –nearly as big as he was- but definitely still a puppy. It barked at him again, pawing at him.
Despite all the things that had just gone wrong for him, Terra couldn't help but smile a little. "Wow...you're really special, aren't you?"
The puppy cocked its head at him, wondering about something. Terra just wanted to scratch its ears, or give it a treat. He pointed to himself. "My name's Terra. What's yours?"
The puppy just barked. Of course; he didn't know why he'd been expecting an actual answer...introductions just seemed like the right thing here. "I guess you can't talk..." Terra mused, folding his arms. And there was no tag or collar, either. He didn't want to go calling his new friend "dog" or "hey you," either, because that didn't feel right. His sights settled again on that strange, fiery disc spinning over the dog's back. He thought over it for a moment before making his decision. "You look like you always have the sun on your back, so I'll call you 'Sunny.'"
The dog, now Sunny, seemed to sigh and lower his head, as if he'd had this sort of thing happen before several times. Sunny sniffed him again, and then wandered over to where the Keyblade had fallen, where he in turn sniffed that. This reminded Terra of how he'd gotten stuck here in the first place. "I got really lost. I made a mistake when I should have listened to my Master, and now...now I don't know how to get home." He didn't know why he was explaining this to Sunny; it wasn't like a dog could do anything about it. He just wanted to tell it to someone.
Sunny pawed at the Keyblade and barked again. Terra wasn't sure what this meant, but he walked over and picked up the blade anyway. At least it felt a little lighter now. He sighed, and dismissed it. The puppy was still staring at him intently. "Are you all alone too, Sunny?"
Sunny whined, as if he wasn't sure at first how to answer that question. But then a thought seemed to strike him, and he leapt forward, biting onto Terra's belt straps.
"Hey! What're you—"
And then in one swift movement, with strength that should not have been possible for a dog that size, Sunny flipped him over and onto his back. Terra struggled to regain his composure, especially with a few revelations...one, that Sunny seemed to support his weight fine, and two, that there flaming disc was now in his hands and yet wasn't burning him. It felt more like putting his hands on sun-warmed grass on a summer day outside the castle.
There was even more to this little puppy than he'd originally thought. Sunny barked at him again, and then suddenly took off running.
Terra had never gone that fast before in his life. He'd never been on a glider, but he wondered if this was what it felt like. Sunny leaped over the grass with incredible speed, zooming down the hill and through the towering trees. With every step, Sunny left a trail of blooming flowers behind him. Terra held on tight, uncertain if he could stay steady, but Sunny seemed to know just how to balance him while running this fast.
For that moment, Terra forgot about his terrible predicament, and just enjoyed this immense feeling. He was racing through the wind and the grass, feeling the warmth of the sun above and below him. It felt like anything was possible.
He wasn't sure how long they raced...Sunny ran down through the forest, leaping over the spots of deep water and across the rushing river. He ran through fields of grass and stone, groves of towering bamboo, and up a path leading up into a shaded mountain. Terra felt he could have run this way forever.
Sunny finally came to a halt at the top of the mountain. Before them stood what looked like the entranceway to a mountain village...Terra could see houses and people beyond. However, the village seemed to be obscured by a thick purple haze, especially around the entrance. He could feel a heavy darkness radiating from here, along with something else. Terra cautiously dismounted, and walked up to the entrance. He glanced back at Sunny.
"Why did you bring us here?" he asked. Sunny barked, then walked up and pawed at the village entrance. His paw hit some invisible barrier, creating a crackling of light. He looked back up at Terra expectantly.
Terra still wasn't entirely certain what he was supposed to do, but he had an idea. "The people, in the village...they can't get out? Because there's a barrier here?"
Sunny barked.
"Can't anyone break the barrier?"
The puppy hung his head low, looking defeated. He took that as a no.
So had Sunny brought him here to try and unlock this barrier? But he wasn't sure he could do that...he'd never really learned about unlocking things the way his Master could. "I don't know what I can do..." He wanted to help, and Sunny looked really disappointed, but he was still feeling unsure from winding up here in the first place.
Sunny whined at him. Why was it so hard to resist that face? Terra crossed his arms, his face scrunched up in worry. "I just..."
His thoughts were interrupted by the return of that dark, cold feeling. It was stronger this time, traveling through the earth in their direction. Sunny must have felt it too, because he started growling at something on the path behind them.
Terra just had time to summon his Keyblade before the Heartless appeared...and this time, there were three. There was that same purple monkey with the fan-weapon, another monkey-like Heartless with a big drum, and a crane-like Heartless with razor wings and claws.
Terra grimaced. He didn't know how he was going to battle three of these things at once, especially considering the results of his first encounter. But it was his duty to try...and in particular, his duty to defend his new friend. "Sunny, run for cover!" he declared, holding his Keyblade in front of him despite his trembling arms.
But Sunny was having none of that. The puppy grabbed Terra by the belt once again and flipped him onto his back. He growled at the Heartless, clearly ready for a fight.
Terra was in no position to argue, so he decided that the best thing to do was go with it. "Then let's get 'em!"
Sunny charged at the Heartless, with Terra hanging on carefully with one hand. He swung his Keyblade at the nearest Heartless – the fan-carrying monkey. Even as he landed a small hit, Sunny’s fiery disc shot out and struck it in the side, causing it to stumble. Terra grinned down at this partner. “So you can fight!”
And fight they did. With a combination of Keyblade slashes and disc strikes, they were able to keep the three Heartless at bay. However, they weren’t beaten yet. Terra tried to focus his attention on the fan-wielding monkey, just because it seemed to be the quickest of the three. His strikes seemed to be working against it...until it held up its fan once again to block. Terra hit it and recoiled, feeling like he’d struck that steel wall again. “Aaagh!”
But before the Heartless could retaliate, something else happened...there came that invisible sword again, and in a single cut, it sliced the steel fan in two. The Heartless collapsed onto its back in shock at the sudden loss of its weapon. This gave Terra the opportunity he needed to jump in and finish it off with a crushing blow. The Heartless shuddered and vanished into purple smoke. Breathing heavily and shaking a bit from the effort of having just killed a Heartless, he glanced back up at Sunny...and saw something like black ink dropping from the puppy’s tail.
There was no time to ask about these things, though, as there were still two Heartless left. The larger monkey with the drum thundered towards them, swinging its drumsticks like twin hammers. Terra got back to his feet, the adrenaline of battle kicking in hard and pushing him onward. He swung at the Heartless with all his strength, but the Keyblade bounced off its massive drum. Sunny sent his disc flying at the foe, only to have it suffer the same effect. The Heartless raised its drumsticks to let loose a massive tremor upon them both. “I think it’s too big for us!” Terra cried.
Sunny just growled at their opponent, flicking his tail. In the next instant, Terra thought he saw something like black ink swimming in the air, as if someone was drawing something... And the instant was over in the time it took to blink, as a multicolored bomb suddenly materialized out of think air, directly above the Heartless. The bomb dropped onto the startled monkey, exploding it into a spectacular display of smoke, fireworks and confetti.
Now Terra was certain of it. These strange, seemingly out-of-nowhere attacks were Sunny’s doing. Whatever this puppy actually was, he could definitely fight on his own.
And if Sunny could do it, then so could he!
In a burst of determination, Terra jumped back onto Sunny’s back and pointed his Keyblade at the remaining Heartless. “One more! Let’s beat him!”
Sunny barked in agreement, and leaped for the crane. It soared higher, and they missed. They tried again, but again the crane flew just out of reach. As they landed, it swooped down on them with razor talons, grazing Terra’s shirt. “We gotta bring him down!”
Sunny caught on fast. Terra spotted what seemed to be another flash of ink, and suddenly an enormous gust of wind appeared and blasted the Heartless. It tried to fight against the rushing winds, but failed and tumbled to the ground in a flurry of feathers. Terra took this opportunity for all it was worth, and charged at the Heartless. He swung his Keyblade in hard, wide arcs, pounding the crane before it had the chance to take flight again. The creature couldn’t withstand such an onslaught, and it too went to join its companions in darkness.
As soon as the last Heartless vanished, the heavy feeling of darkness evaporated from the area. Terra was still shaking a bit...he’d never tried to fight that many enemies at once. But he’d won! And it was because he and Sunny had been able to work together.
Sunny definitely seemed pleased at their victory, too! He barked in happiness and nuzzled up against him...Terra smiled back and scratched behind his ears. “We did it!” He was already feeling better about this. Sometimes anything was possible with a friend.
Of course, now this left them with their original task...trying to find a way to break this barrier. He still wasn’t positive if he could break it, but then again, he’d just beaten three Heartless at once when he’d never done that before. He faced the gateway to the village, with Sunny by his side. While the Master hadn’t taught this yet, maybe...
“Maybe I can open it...if you can help me?”
Sunny barked once in reply. Terra concentrated hard on the smoky-waving barrier ahead, waiting...and after a moment, it appeared. The outline of a keyhole traced itself in black ink in the center of the barrier. Terra pointed his Keyblade at the outline, and concentrated on it with all his heart. He wanted this lock to open, he wanted the key in his hand to become a key to this door...
It seemed like he concentrated for ages, until at last a beam of light shot out from the tip of his blade and connected with the keyhole. He heard a sound like a lock being turned, and opened one eye at the barrier. Both the purple screen and the keyhole evaporated into the air. He kept the Keyblade raised in amazement as the haze of purple mist lifted completely from the village. The barrier locking the people inside had vanished.
An enormous grin spread across Terra’s face, and he nearly toppled over when Sunny jumped up on him and began licking his face. He laughed, not really caring if he ended up covered in dog slobber. “Hey, take it easy, Sunny! I’m glad, too!”
Sunny backed off, but remained close by him, wagging his tail. Terra dusted himself off and dismissed his Keyblade. “I guess everyone can go in and out of the village now, and can see their friends.”
But saying this just reminded Terra of his own friends. He remained put as Sunny moved to walk into the village. The dog paused and turned to look at him as the triumphant smile dropped from his face. Sunny whined at him.
“I wonder if I’m ever going to see my home or friends again.”
Sunny just seemed to stare at him for awhile, as if thinking something over. He then walked over and nuzzled under his arm. A tiny bit of Terra’s smile returned as he pet the dog’s head. “Is this your home, Sunny?”
The puppy shook his head no. Terra supposed that someone like Sunny would also have a special home...maybe he was from an entirely different world, too. He was glad that he had a new friend here, but still, he wanted to be home.
Sunny pulled on his belt again. Terra got the message, and this time hopped right on his back. The puppy took off again, heading back down the trail away from the village. Terra held on tight as they raced through the grass and bamboo, feeling the mountain winds urging them on. They didn’t run as far this time, remaining within the bamboo-filled valley.
They stopped in front of what looked like another gateway. However, this one didn’t appear to be leading anywhere. The road through it simply ended in the nearby mountainside. Terra climbed off of Sunny, and gazed up at the gateway, trying to figure it out. This gateway didn’t seem to have any aura of darkness about it...on the contrary, it felt rather peaceful. Sparrows flittered about the gate, singing in the breeze.
“Is there something special here?”
Now, Sunny looked a little sad. He turned slowly towards the gate, and Terra saw the lines of ink reappear. This time, the ink traced a wide circle in the center of the gateway. As soon as the circle finished, there was a brilliant flash of light, and the circle glowed with a dark blue force. It looked just like the gates Master Eraqus made when he traveled to different worlds!
Terra just stared at the gate for a moment. Even after everything that had happened, it still seemed unbelievable. He finally turned to look at Sunny. “Is this...the way home?” he asked, the amazement obvious in his voice.
Sunny nodded, but still looked sad. Terra’s heart filled with relief and excitement...and then something else at the realization that he’d have to leave his new friend behind.
“Oh, Sunny...you’ve done so much for me! I...I’m gonna miss you...”
Sunny bounded up to him and licked at his face, whining. Terra scratched back at his ears, his smile sad. “I’ll never forget you...and when I’m older and I can travel to worlds all on my own, I’ll come back and visit you, okay?” Sunny barked in agreement. “It’s a promise!”
Terra stood up again. He’d never known it could be so hard to say goodbye to someone. And he’d already learned a lot...that he could fight Heartless, and could open locks. It felt weird leaving Sunny alone, even if he knew this strange puppy could take care of himself. “You find your friends and home soon too, okay?”
Sunny barked, and that was good enough for him. He made a move for the gateway, but hesitated, and turned to hug his new friend one more time. He gave him an extra hard squeeze, trying not to cry. “Goodbye, Sunny...and thank you!”
Sunny whined with sadness, but still nudged him towards the open door. Terra stood straight and squared his shoulders, mentally and physically preparing himself for whatever lay ahead. It took more effort than he would have thought, but his feet brought him to the gateway. He stepped out of the grassy, sun-filled field, and into the unknown.
There was a moment of deepest darkness and brightest light, of his stomach tumbling up into his throat and down into his toes as time and space hit him in perfect organized chaos. It seemed to last forever and no time at all, until the darkness split before him and he suddenly landed with a crash on a thick carpet of grass.
Terra lay there for a moment, his head spinning. It took him a few seconds before he lifted his head and adjusted his vision. He saw fields of grass, trees, golden chains binding high mountains...
He sat up suddenly, ignoring the pounding in his head. He was home! Sunny had really gotten him back home! Terra got to his feet and started back towards the castle, eager to see Aqua or...
He didn’t have to go far before he ran into his Master. It looked like Eraqus was just returning from his visit, as the armor dissolved from his person. Terra dashed up to him and stopped just short, breathing hard. “Master!”
Eraqus paused, obviously sensing something...different about his young apprentice. He just replied with, “Terra.”
“Master...you’re home!” he said, although his tone could just as easily have said “I’m home!”
“See? You were fine while I was gone,” Eraqus said. “Did you have fun or learn anything while I was away?”
Terra thought over this for a moment, all the memories that strange world and Sunny running through his mind. He looked back up with a small smile. “Yes, Master. I think I did both.”
