Gotta go hug my toys
So yeah, I saw Toy Story 3 last night with [livejournal.com profile] yamikonumber7. Saw it in iMax format and 3D, which really was a nice little gravy but didn't really make or break my opinion of the movie...like with Up, after awhile I totally forgot that the 3D was there.

Bottom line: GO SEE IT! Every time Pixar does a TS sequel there's always a part of me that worries "Oh no, sequel movie, how can they possibly make it live up to what's come before?" But TS3 more than satisfies. It seemed like it brought the whole franchise full-circle, tying in the themes they set up from the start (family and purpose, fear of abandonment/uselessness), and would be the best place to end the series. And even though it treads familiar ground (Toys worry that they're going to be neglected or forgotten! They go on an epic adventure to get back to Andy in time!) it still felt new.

I don't know if it was the "best" of the series (that may have to go to TS2 for me), but it was most definitely the most intense. Holy cow. Inbetween all the laughs at the jokes (and there were many laughs), there were parts where I was literally yelling in terror. Like that DAMN MONKEY. OMG I knew that monkey would be evil, because those monkeys are always evil, but that was a flipping horrifying monkey. That monkey and Alma totally convince me that Pixar could probably pull off the first (and best) ever 3D animated horror film if they ever tried it. Also, I always knew I hated those realistic baby dolls. 8(

Probably the most intense part was the climax at the city dump...the whole audience applauded at the part with THE CLAAAAAAW! And yes, I cried at the end, when Andy was giving his toys away to Bonnie and explaining to her how special each one is. That was just so adorable and so heartbreaking all at once.

As a random aside, I love the way that Pixar was able to pick up on random small behaviors for the human character to make them seem even more human...the way Bonnie's mother strokes her daughter's hair when Bonnie is hiding behind her, the way Andy wheels himself across his room in his computer chair the way an exasperated teenager actually does, etc.

So yeah, definitely go see this one...3D or 2D, either's fine. I'd go see it again. XD

Just curious, what did you think about the cartoon short before the movie?

I loved it! I feel like I say every short is their new best short, but this one was just so creative and so poignant that it's hard not to say it was their best one. XD It's also one of the areas where the 3D really made a difference, which is very ironic considering the main two characters are in 2D.

That short was really REALLY good. I loved the combination of 2D and 3D. I'm still wondering what that soundbyte came from (like who was the guy who talked about prejudices and stuff)

All in all Toy Story 3 was great! A satisfying conclusion. The movie reeked of nostalgia in a good way. I swear there were more adults than kids in the audience and this movie was almost made for those people who had grown up with Toy story. :)

Yeah, I wondered that, too. I wonder if they say in the credits for the short.

I am convinced that while Pixar appears to be making movies for kids, really they've been steadily steering them more and more towards adult films. XD

OMG OMG OMG YES. I, too, was so in love with the way Andy wheeled himself from his computer to the toy box with his feet. There is so much gorgeous animation in this film.

AHAHA YAY XD I don't know know why, just when he did that I was like "dang that's so good!" There really was a lot of incredible animation.

My theatre applauded at the claw-rescue, too! It was fantastic.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves the human animation! How Andy reacted to Woody 'waving' at him at the end was a wonderful touch.

It's hard NOT to applaud at that moment, just because it's so epic and they build the suspense to it so well. XD

ffffffff yes that brought sobs from me. It seems like in the first two movies the human animation was rather downplayed, but here they really brought it up a notch more so that it feels like Andy was a real participant in the movie rather than just the goal for the toys. Like the scene where Mrs. Potato Head sees him looking for the toys and he slumps against the wall...great acting right there.
