WHO'S THAT POKEMON part two
Okay, so I've spotted ANOTHER bug that I just cannot identify. This one was also significantly scarier than the last one, and I have no clue what it is.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This thing was waaay big, like an inch to two inches long, with a big ugly wriggling butt. It was mostly yellow ochre in color, with dark black stripes, and the jaws were dark red. It looked like it had an ant's head, but I don't think it was an ant or a beetle. I don't believe it could fly, but it was hard to tell since it was basically writhing on the ground in death throes. Didn't see any wings on it.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT KIND OF BUG THIS IS?!

Oh and also, there's a new Lunargyros page up today, you can read it here .

I tried to find out what kind of bug it is, but I think I looked at too many insectphotos and now I'm gonna have bug nightmares tonight. So I have given up the search.

I WISH I STILL HAD MY BUG BOOK. Hrm. The lack of wings makes me think it must be some sort of larval or nymph form of something, but of what, I don't know

IT'S PIKA-

Actually, I think it might be a velvet ant. Was it making any kind of audible noise? Like beeping?

[identity profile] lynxgriffin.livejournal.com on November 5th, 2009 12:48 am (UTC)
Nope, no audible noise, just pathetic wriggling. D: But it looks like it's actually PIKA a potato bug.

Reminds me of the first time I saw what I think looks like a house centipede but the things are more the size of This.

Needless to say, I still hate those things and they're like... everywhere. Oh... and they're fast buggers. Like to the point that you're leaping around getting an excersize avoiding it / catching it / killing it.

UUUUGH, I'm so glad I've never seen any centipedes around here. D8 I think centipedes would get me shrieking far more than bugs or spiders ever could do.

Potato bug. They are terrifying and awful, but I'm not even sure if they can do any type of damage. Look it up on google. Try to avoid pics. YUCK.

But that is for sure what it was. I had to come across one once. Oh my god. Nightmarish.

From Wikipedia, with my commentary in brackets:

Jerusalem crickets (genus Stenopelmatus) are a group of large (body length up to 69 millimetres (2.7 in)), flightless insects native to the western United States, along the Pacific Coast, and south into Mexico. [JERUSALEM CRICKET! Sounds like a Victorian/Western Expletive..]

Because of their large, human-like head, they are commonly called niño de la tierra (Spanish for "child of the earth"), Earth baby, cara de niño (Spanish for "child's face"), wó see ts'inii (Navajo for "skull insect"), or old bald-headed man. [THEY HAVE A NAME IN NAVAJO. THAT IS AWESOME.] [ALSO CALLING IT CHILD'S FACE IS CREEPY] They are also often called potato bugs.

Despite their name, Jerusalem crickets are neither true crickets nor true bugs [THEN WHAT *ARE* THEY OMGGGGGGG] and they do not prefer potatoes for food. [THEY PREFER THE SOULS OF THEIR ENEMIES] Active only at night, LIKE VAMPIRES the insects use their strong mandibles to feed primarily on dead organic material [THEY WILL EAT YOU WHEN YOU DIE] but can also eat other insects. [OMFG I WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE SOULS OF THEIR ENEMIES] Their highly adapted feet are used for burrowing beneath moist soil to feed on decaying root plants and tubers.

Ok. I am so creeped out now. Off to bed....lovely ;)

DUDE THAT THING DOES NOT HAVE A BABY FACE. It has a giant ant face on a giant bee butt with giant cricket legs. 8(

So wait it's mostly like they feed on the souls of potatoes?! NOW I AM GLAD WE DON'T HAVE ANY POTATOES IN OUR YARD. D:

Even Sunshine sniffed it and looked like "Man this thing is creepy, I'm leaving it the hell alone!"
