Comic Con '05, Disneyland's 50th and my 21st!
Well after a rather stressful and unhappy week, a weekend at Comic Con and then Disneyland was exactly what I needed. It was insanely busy, expensive and tiring, but it was also tons of fun. A (partial) report follows!

Wednesday Rei, Em and I got up fairly early in order to finish getting ready for our long drive down to San Diego. We got going at a decent hour, and traffic was okay getting there, although we did stop along the way for a much-needed rest. We arrived at Alison’s house first, and met her at her work just down the street. Since Em and Rei were staying with her, we unloaded all of their stuff, and had many quick introductions and instructions. Afterwards, we finally drove down to the hotel I was staying at, which was the Sheraton Suites. I ended up paying an arm and a leg for valet parking, which was a huge pain, but at least I knew my car was taken care of...plus, normal parking cost just as much. Gehh.

We headed on to the convention center after that. I had never been to the San Diego Comic Con before, so it was extremely than overwhelming. From what I heard later, there was nearly around 100,000 people there…even more than were at Disneyland the next day, I think. Of course, that many people crammed into that confined a space meant both foot and car traffic was nearly unmovable. However, all that considered, those thousands of people were handled with a lot of efficiency. Our registration and badge pickup were handled literally in the blink of an eye, unlike Anime Expo, which took an excess of four hours. After getting all of our freebies and a very helpful guide, we were ready to hit the Exhibit Hall for the first time.

And holy tap-dancing Moses on toast. Having never been before, it was like walking into a miniature geek city. Even after spending several days there I was still barely able to scratch the surface of all that was available. Since Wednesday was preview night, they were handing out tons of freebies, and I came away with a bunch of cool stuff, plus tons of little promotional throwaways. Most I’ll probably end up pitching, but some I’ll keep and investigate. All of the booths presented there were more than awesome, with tons of previews of movies, shows, anime, comics and game stuffes that I wanted to see and do. It was especially cool to see lots of full-detail figures on display, especially the Weta ones. They had stuff from Narnia, King Kong, Lord of the Rings and a bunch of others.

Now, what pretty much made my weekend was the Disney/Buena Vista booth, since they at last had the Kingdom Hearts 2 demo open to the public! Woohoo! XD I spent probably waaay more time there than I should have, basically having the time of my life. There were two worlds available for play; Mulan’s world and the Coliseum underworld. Each world had a mission battle and a boss battle. Mulan’s boss battle was the giant dragon Heartless, and the Underworld’s was Cerberus (once again!) I knew I was going to have fun when this came out, but holy crap, now it’s confirmed. Sora has craploads of amazing new moves now (and we only got a small sampling of them!) It seems that the triangle button’s going to be much more important this time around, since it’s basically the way which Sora executes all of his special and circumstantial moves. (I got to do the special move where Sora jams the Keyblade between Cerberus’s teeth, which KICKED ASS.) The camera, while it took a little getting used to, was much more user-friendly than in the previous game. And wow, does Sora sound older. So yes...I will be continuing to geek out over such developments for awhile to come. XD

And now, for the rest of the convention! All three days I went to the Comic Book Law panel, which was quite informative, so I’m glad I went and took lots of notes. The lawyer who was giving the class was entertaining, and gave a bunch of good examples. Of course, everything was very general, and I will probably have to look for a good lawyer to peruse any contracts I might get in the future. It will cost money, yes, but it would be worth it in the long run. On Thursday I also went to the comic book coloring panel, but (surprisingly enough,) the people running it weren’t nearly as interesting, and overall I was a bit more bored. Also, the class felt somewhat disjointed, like nobody could decide what they should actually be going over. I think I learned one useful thing at that class...but I also think I’ve forgotten it now. :-P

I spent most of Thursday scouring the Exhibit Hall by myself, which wasn’t nearly as fun as doing it with friends, but was fun all the same. I did run into Jeanie for part of the day, and finally met up with Rei and Em towards when the hall was closing. I bought a bunch of comic books and other stuff I’d been meaning to buy, including some stuff I hadn’t seen in ages. (My list of loot is below!) XD

That Thursday night, I went with Jeanie and Tabitha (who got the hotel room) to go see the “Dear Friends: Music from Final Fantasy” concert at the San Diego marina. I bought a program, and even though I was freezing most of the night, we ended up with very good seats. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert; overall it was just really cool getting to hear all of those songs live. Of course, they ended up playing One Winged Angel as the encore...twice. Just hearing that song live was more than awesome. XD

Friday was a bit more of the same. I went to the comic law panel, and headed to the Exhibit Hall for my daily dose of the KH2 demo, where I was lucky enough to run into and Irene (who the creators of this cool manga.) I got to hang out with them for awhile, which I was glad for, especially considering I didn’t really run into any of the other cool RSoM/Pseudome people while I was there. This was a cryin' shame, considering I had so much fun with people at AX, and there were awesome people like ActionJackal and Marty and hawt TP editors! Curse my rotten luck! XP

Aaaaanywho...I met up with Rei and Em in the massive Hall H, where we attended the Disney panel and then stayed for the Lucasfilm panel. The Disney panel was great fun, especially since was saw some first-ever previews for Pirates of the Caribbean 2! The concept art for the new movie looks sweet, and we came away with a free poster of the new villain Davey Jones! Teh awesome! There were several previews of other new Disney stuff coming out including "Sky High," where Bruce Campbell was one of the guests on the panel; "Chicken Little", which looks funnier than I first expected; and "Cars." Several of the Pixar guys were there, which was quite awesome. The more I hear about their offices, the more like it sounds like a fun place to work. It was also quite interesting hearing the history of the company, and how they essentially started as a garage studio. Just goes to show you that even the humblest beginnings can take you great places. The Lucasfilm panel following was equally interesting, with previews of video games, new TV shows and other stuffes involving the Star Wars universe. I noticed a subtle strain during most of the panel, as if it was three parts excitement and one part excuses for the prequel trilogy. I think that came out most when one of the fans remarked that Episodes I through III were "horribly written," and asked about fan-helped versions of Episodes VII-IX. Of course, he was given a very curt and ambiguous answer. However, aside from that, most fans were just happy to be there.

Saturday I wish I had a chance to do more, but I did have to leave in the middle of the day. I checked out the Art Show, which was very interesting, and bought a few last minute things at the Exhibit Hall before I had to head out. Overall I wish I had been a better participant, but mostly I was just getting a feel for the convention as a whole, and getting my bearings. I can see that it’s a great place to make connections and pimp yourself, and I’ll have to get my portfolio into good working order before next year’s convention. I did have a few comic pages prepared, but I never got the time to sit down with anyone and share them. There was more than enough to do from morning until night; often with cool stuff overlapping each other. All in all, I had a completely awesome time, and I’ll definitely have to go back next year.

Saturday after I left the convention, I headed down to Anaheim to meet my family. I got there perfectly fine, and we went to eat out pizza. Afterwards, I got my birthday presents (woohoo!) and had a pretty good much-needed talk with my mom about some of the crap I'd been going through earlier.

Sunday was my 21st birthday…and the 50th birthday of Disneyland! I’d been looking forward to this for quite awhile, and I had a bunch of fun. Of course, it was massively crowded that day, but that wasn’t surprising at all. We did have to stand in a very, very, VERY long line just to have our bags searched, and just navigating the park became a nightmare at times, but it was also surprisingly efficient considering how many people were there. We all got free golden Mickey ears with the date on the back (woo!) and they were also handing out free cupcakes everywhere. At the beginning of the day there was an opening ceremony that included, among other guests, Governor Schwartzenegger (who received a...golden motorcycle?), Michael Eisner, and the new CEO of Disney (since Eisner’s finally stepped down), and the original master of ceremonies for when Disneyland opened 50 years ago. There was all kinds of celebration thingies, and we saw some cool presentations on the history of Disneyland. I’d really like to learn more about it, since the place has gone through so many changes and seen so many different peoples and times.

I got the little birthday sticker at Main Street, so it was kinda fun having all of these random employees say "Happy Birthday" all day long. We did some oldschool rides, such as 'It’s a Small World,' which was campy, but still good fun. We also went on Space Mountain since it had just reopened, and WOW, was there a difference! The ride's now much faster, the lighting is slightly different, and the put back the music (yay!) It was the first time I was still whooping after the ride was over…extremely awesome. XD We also hit Star Tours, Pirates of the Caribbean (of course), Splash Mountain, and Haunted Mansion. We ate an early dinner at the Blue Bayou (the restaurant right along the edge of the PotC ride) and I had some very good Cajun barbecue shrimp...very spicy! We completely used the day up doing and seeing one thing or another, and all in all I had an awesome birthday there. It will be cool to say that I was able to go to Disneyland’s 50th birthday in the past, and who knows...maybe I’ll be able to attend the 100th anniversary when I’m 71! ;D

While there is some of the magic lost at Disneyland when you get older, I couldn’t help but get caught up in the rampant commercialism that comes naturally with Disney storytelling. No matter what their policies are, and how poor their products may be now, you can’t deny that the stories and characters Walt came up with are timeless, and the animation was innovative for its time. Maybe it’s just because I grew up on Disney, but I greatly appreciated that injection of my childhood.

In fact, I’ve been craving Disney for awhile, and as a result am now proceeding to go on a Disney binge. I rented a bunch of movies, and I may start rereading that book I got on the 'nine old men' animators. It was practically the only biography I ever voluntarily read. ;)

And now *drumroll* the combination list of loot I got away with from Comic Con/Disneyland/birthday!
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Woohoo! I would've been surprised if I *hadn't* gotten this for a b-day present, but I was happy for it all the same. ;) I'm currently only about seven chapters in, but I'm loving it so far, and intend to read more starting tomorrow, or tonight if I can. I believe I got spoiled for part of the ending, but come on...how could anyone NOT see that coming? ;) Of course, the details of said event I'm still unspoiled on, and I intend to remain that way until I finish the book on my own, thankyouverymuch.
- Pakkin's Land issues 1, 3 and 4. - I had almost forgotten this series existed, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it reprinted, and in color! However, upon rereading it, I found some of the magic lost...while I appreciated the Narnian aspect of the story, C.S. Lewis still remains a better author of Christian fantasy. Pakkin's Land was wordy, not terribly well drawn, and well...pretty blatantly preachy. I do want to draw comics that could potentially fall under the "Christian" category, since that's something that's been a part of my life and I keep finding it pop up in my story ideas. However, if I'm going to do it, I at least want to do it WELL. And making it preachy or blatantly obvious that there's a "Christian agenda" doesn't usually make for a better story. It's such a shame that what little Christian comics there are out there generally are not as well-executed as their secular counterparts...no wonder no one takes them seriously. *Shakes fist of resolution of changing peoples' perceptions...or something*
Wow, that was a ramble...
- Next Exit issues 1-4. - I'd been meaning to pick this one up for awhile, and since I don't usually visit comic book stores, I was glad to find them. Haven't gotten to reading them yet, though.
- Bone volume one. I swear, someday I'm going to own this entire series...I guess this is just a start. Jeff Smith's characters are just so fascinating and hilarious all at the same time, you can't help but love the series.
- SeaQuest DSV pilot episode. - Holy COW, was I shocked to find this! I haven't seen SeaQuest in ages, so I need to rewatch the pilot. It was one of those Australian shows that became popular for awhile (anyone remember Ocean Girl or Spellbinders?) and then disappeared. My brother and I even used to have the action figures for that series...a shame we didn't keep them; they're probably worth a fortune now.
- A box of Dewar's chews for my birthday. And they were all caramel! Woohoo! Must eat more caramel chewy goodness...
- The complete Dangermouse series on DVD. - I was totally NOT expecting this as a present! I didn't even know it was out on DVD, for that matter. It's basically ridiculous animated British humor at its best, and boy is it fun. You can't get much better than the Scottish alien with a dyslexic robot named "Grovel."
- A got a cute Disneyland shirt that's drawn in the old-style Disneyland touristy...font-thing. It's cute, 'cause it has the PotC dog with the keys on it! And a ghost, and the abominable snowman! (sp?...)
- Rei and Em got me a life-size Shippo plushie! Extreme cuteness attack! XD
- I bought Bizenghast and RSOM 5 from the Tokyopop booth. I missed out on getting them signed, though...sadness!
- I also somehow ended up with copies of Spooner and The Lab from the same company that does one of my favorite comics, Herobear and the Kid. I seriously wish that my comics looked like Mike Kunkel's; his characters are just brilliant.
- Guhh...I'm sure there's something else that I'm forgetting. Oh well. ;P

So I’m back home today, hanging out at home and relaxing after an extremely busy weekend. Overall, the combination of geek joy and childhood fluff has left me feeling significantly calmer, and ready to face whatever lies ahead. ^^

Scanning status: Wow, I've been doing this since 9:00 am this morning, and the pages keep on comin'. Who knows when this will end...

Drawing: Going to start back on RSOM 6 thumbnails soon. Am also doing random sketches for stuff here and there. I'll probably end up with some HBP fanart by the time I'm done with the book. And also, I wanted to finish that summon animation I started awhile back...

Writing: Catching up on emails takes awhile. @_@ Am also doing quick blurbs on my Disney binge. And also also, I'm starting to get another story idea. It's...a little weird, but would probably work as a short manga for RSOM or Takuhai. o.O

Current Music: the scanner hums on and on...
Current Mood: tired, but motivated

Oh heck, no...Shippo from Inuyasha. (Like they sell any other plushies? ;D) And that Shippo's tiny compared to everyone else.

Although a plushie the size of a cow would be cool...
