Descartes and Scholastic Endeavors (BLOGGER 9-5-04)
I almost spelled "endeavors" the British way...wow...

Well, in reading Descartes' Discourse on Method, I have come to the conclusion that Descartes was a 17th-century blogger. While his writings are fairly easy reading, he skips around so much between subjects and rambles on about nothing that it appears he's just writing whatever pops into his head. And since that is the case with most blogging (unless you're really thorough about it... *looks at OPR-kun*) Descartes is one of the world's first bloggers.

For how much people use and abuse the "I think, therefore I am" statement today, Descartes didn't do a much better job of explaining it...he uses very circular logic, and jumps to conclusions that aren't necessarily there. His rambling is so bizarre that it jumps from spending about three pages on the circulatory system, to scarily eerie predictions on A.I. and humanoid robots, to why he is correct about everything and that he doesn't want praise for it. If there's one thing that seems constant about philosophers, it's that they are usually very full of themselves.

After Descartes in Great Books we're reading Paradise Lost (which I need to start...) which sounds interesting just because I've always wanted to read it. However, I am wary of when we get to Kant...(it's the only book that Osaka-chan never finished...yikes!)

Otherwise, classes look to be interesting and informative this year without too much busywork...hooray for the end of G.E.s! I am still a little nervous about Journalism, since that requires people skills that I am not necessarily...skilled at, but Dr. Jordan has way too much enthusiasm for me to not at least try. (Considering the state of the American press today, it's almost a naive enthusiasm...) Communication Graphics is going to be a fun and easy class to the point of it being a pushover. Our homework this weekend is to full around on Photoshop...heck, I can do that! XD I can't wait until we get into Illustrator, Quark or Flash more (particularly Flash and Macromedia in general) because those are programs I don't know yet and would really benefit from learning. Eventually I will have to break down and buy Macromedia, just because I want to learn it and I know having it under my belt (like Maya) will look much nicer to potential employers.

Screenwriting I know will be a *very* beneficial class just in terms of story organization and script format. I'm still not officially registered (and it's past the deadline, ARRRGH) but if the Registration guys are as nice as I remember them, I should be able to get it official-ized. (Prays and knocks on wood.)

What IS going to be hard is working out the story idea I have for my movie script, especially considering its controversial nature. At first I could think of absolutely no ideas and was considering just adapting the gas station manga into a movie format. However, I was reluctant to do this since I already imagined the characters and dialogue in a manga format (and we can't write animated movies, dangitall T_T) Then, I finally got an idea for a sci-fi/thriller movie based off of a conspiracy theory video about 9/11 I watched with V-chan. However, I'm nervous that the movie idea won't go over so well with my peers or my professor...not only is 9/11 in itself still a sensitive topic, but the movie idea would imply a lot of things about the American government (that *do* have a basis of fact to them) that a lot of people would be extremely pissed off about. I guess all I can do is go ahead with the idea and hope that people (and by people I mainly mean the professor) are okay with it. If not, at least I have a less-than-desirable backup plan. ;-P

Operator Status: Not as quiet as the summer, but much better than the weekday. At least there are a few good things about Sunday morning shift.

Maya PLE comprehension status: 20% Finally finished the polygon modeling tutorial, which means I can split, extend and smooth polygons now! Yay! XD Some of the commands you have to give the program are so precise; it's no wonder it's easy to screw up...
