Second post whut?
Got back from two new classes today; Storyboarding and Intro to Compositing. The storyboarding class looks like it's going to be fun (although I have to go and buy more art supplies...) Teacher's interesting and a fount of knowledge, and very vested in this movie he's making that I can understand why no studio would pick up because it's on the bizarre side.

Anyways, in class today, we had to storyboard parts of a scene from The Descent.

Yeah, I will never be seeing that movie all the way through. XD; I'm not a huge fan of horror movies to begin with, but the scene we boarded was freaking me out enough. We did the scene where the girls are squeezing through this long, tight crawlspace, and the main character gets stuck and can't move for a long time before barely escaping the tunnel caving in. I'm not claustriphobic (more the opposite, really,) but seeing that reminded me of when I was thirteen and we were visiting Israel for one of the Overseas Programs. We crawled through this system of caves somewhere in the Israel desert that I don't remember the exact history for, but from what I remember, the Jews tunneled them so that they were small enough for a normal person to fit in decently. So when the Romans were trying to kill them, the Jews would run into the caves, the Romans would follow them and then get stuck in there with their big bulky Roman armor, where the Jews would then stab them dead because they were stuck. :Db (It could have been the Christians doing this too; I don't remember properly. D: )

Regardless to say, the tunnels were pretty small and narrow at parts. Nothing like in the movie, as there was usually space to get on your hands and knees. But there was this one point where we had to twist through this narrow space like a corner between moving forward and moving upwards, and I must've positioned myself the wrong way because for a moment I literally couldn't move. Just like under a minute before I squeezed through and was fine, but just that half a minute of instant panic and going AAAUGH AAAUGH AAAUGH AAAUGH AAAUGH AAAUGH was...not at alllll fun. D: And seeing that scene reminded me of that feeling. So no, I won't watch the rest of The Descent with you, kthx.

That said, we had to storyboard that scene on reeeeeally teeny tiny thumbnails so as to focus entirely on composition and contrast of the shot and not focus on details. And that scene has some terrific composition for a horror movie, so it was fun to break down each part into essentially black and white and maybe occasionally a midtone. I've never done thumbnails or storyboarding like that before, so it was fun and now I share how mine came out:

Otherwise, I now need to think of something to do for the Compositing class. We're using AfterEffects, which I've never used before, but so far seems like a hyped-up love child of Flash and Photoshop. The class is only five weeks long, so he's whizzing through the program at supersonic speed. o_o
