We drove out to the Burbank theater close to the Disney studios, because Willow had the opportunity to go to the Disney-employees-and-their-friends showing early in the morning, and I said I wanted to go along! Only two previews, both of them Disney: one of them was "Meet the Robinsons," which I saw some of the concept art for earlier. The villain looks absolutely hilarious. And the next Pixar film will apparently be about a rat in Paris with a love of fine food. Adorableness!
Once again, I absolutely love everything that Pixar does. Seriously...people keep saying their winning streak can't last forever, that they'll eventually make a dud, but it still hasn't happened yet! And Cars had great characters, gorgeous backgrounds (duh), a well-told story, and just LOTS of creativity. Lightning McQueen completely came off as the unlikeable-badass-lone-wolf that finally learns his lesson, and all of the supporting cast was just perfect. I loved the Italian three-wheeler, the hippie VW Bus and the creepy old T-model especially. XD
What I found really interesting was that this was the first movie Pixar's done that doesn't take place in the normal, human world. Even stuff like Monsters Inc., Bug's Life, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, etc. etablished that these characters were interacting with humans (with or without the humans' knowledge). But the setting they have for 'Cars' is essentially an exact replica of America...except populated entirely by vehicles. The cars go to work, use items such as cameras, have homes to sleep in, diners to eat at (gasoline, that is) and behave like this weird mix of vehicle-people. I think they did this because they wanted to keep the focus on the cars as characters, and not have this car/driver relationship issue. And yet, the world was still entirely believable. I never found myself questioning "How would a car be a lawyer?", which to me is a sign of pretty dang good storytelling. I wish I could create stories like that.
In short...it was hilarious and adorable, and you should go see it! ;P
And woah, some art!
