There is a visual indicator of checkpoints actually! I didn't see it until I had it pointed out to me. It's a blue and green symbol with a Mickey head and a silver border around itthat appears on the upper left side of the screen. Whenever you see that, the game has saved! Saves are actually fairly frequent; they happen pretty much every time you move between projector-separated areas, before and after boss fights, etc.
