I want this "You" situation taken care of

So before I get to anything else, I have an important question for comics-friends on my flist, especially people who've published before, since I know there's some awesome artists here who've done that before...

I'm getting really close to finishing up Lunargyros. Like, just a couple of pages left to draw (even if I've still got a lot more to post.) So I really want to try and find a print publisher for it! I've tried out a couple of places, but not gotten really far thusfar. Either contract problems or just no interest. So I wanted to ask: does anyone know of a good company to go to that would be willing to publish something like Lunargyros, probably in two or three books? It's going to be 350 pages total, plus whatever supplemental stuff I want to add. And obviously Tokyopop isn't going to work out now...

Or that failing, I know a few people have self-published! What's a good print-on-demand company that you can recommend, especially for books that large? I heard Ka-Blam is pretty decent? How do you usually go about promoting/selling self-published comics, aside from at cons and online? (I don't think I can afford a table at SDCC unless I shared with many people...maybe Anime LA would work better...) Any thoughts are welcome!

Last night for Father's Day we went out and saw X-Men First Class, and it was highly enjoyable! :D Would totally recommend dudes go see it! It was definitely better than the third one or Wolverine, anyway...

- Young!Xavier was sooooo cuuuute. And they were totally laying on the subtext heavy with Xavier and Erik, but TBH I wasn't paying that much attention.
- The one thing that really annoyed me was the fact that even in this movie about diversity and being who you are, they killed off the only black guy. And he had cool powers, too. Come on movie, why'd you have to go and do that?
- The action scenes were pretty dang awesome, especially the end. And I was somewhat impressed with how Erik kept coming up with new ways to kill people with metal.
- ...I thought Hank was cuter when he was furry and blue. >>
- Banshee was also a lot of fun.
- The part where Azazel was picking up guards and then dropping them from 200 feet up was legitimately freaky.
- So yeah! Worth seeing.

And finally, we have up another episode of our Let's Play Kingdom Hearts 2!

We'll record more tonight, and hopefully it'll go well! /o/

I'm currently self publishing my own comic and I've gone to Rink Printing to do it. They're just starting out so they're small, but they're speedy and professional. I also like the fact that I'm talking to an actual person rather than just 'customer service'. You may need to go to them directly but if you tell them what you're looking for, they'll give you specs and let you think about it.

Ka-Blam is a good printer, but apparently people have to keep e-mailing them and keep poking them to make sure that the work is done on time. A friend of mine didn't get her comics done in time for Comic Con last year even though they kept reassuring her that they would. Comixepress is also a good printer but same thing, you gotta keep poking and reminding them.

For print publishing... I have no idea. A lot of manga print companies have been disappearing lately, so maybe a company that does American comics? How about Oni Press or Dark Horse or IDW?

[identity profile] lynxgriffin.livejournal.com 2011-06-20 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh okay, I haven't heard of Rink Printing yet. :Oa I may give them a try if they have good customer service and can tailor things to what I wanna do. (Or at least find out how it'd go.)

Hmmm, right now I'm not working on any sort of deadline (def. not prepared to go showing LG at Comic Con this year unfortunately), but I've really had enough of being left in the waiting game forever, too...at least that's another option.

Yeah, it seems like manga companies are on the downslide. I tried Oni Press, and they said they weren't interested. :( Haven't tried Dark Horse or IDW yet, though.

Just read this about Image Comics: http://www.imagecomics.com/submissions.php

You should give them a try!

[identity profile] lynxgriffin.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh...nice that it's all creator-owned, although it looks like they talk mostly about proposals! Do you think a book that's already finished is outside what they're looking for?

[identity profile] bluejeans07.livejournal.com 2011-06-22 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea but it's worth a shot to ask :D

Sadly, I can't give you any advice on self-publishing, but congrats on being close enough to finishing to begin thinking about it. :) Best of luck.

X-Men is good, and I agree with you, especially re: the totally unneeded killing off of Darwin and blue fur improving Hank's look (not that he wasn't adorable in a geeky way beforehand. I could be biased, though, as I'm used to him being the fuzzy blue big guy).

Pssst..Soundwave? I think you might mean Banshee?

*laughs at the Let's Play* If I didn't like Roxas (and Axel) so much, that prologue would be unbearable. Looking forward to more~ XD

Thankees muchly! I'll probably post all over whenever I find a good publishing option. XD

Yeah, he was adorable beforehand, but I thought he was more adorable blue and furry. XD Apparently that whole setup is pretty different from the comics, but I haven't read the original comics, soooo just going off the movie.

...Aw crap you're right, it was Banshee. I FAIL FOREVER *goes to edit*

Glad you're enjoying it! :D

XD You're welcome, and I will look forward to hearing the search results~

I've not read much of the original comics, either, but from what I've heard the basic backstory for Beast's appearance is the essence of what you see in the movie: overly concerned about his slightly different appearance, he invented a serum he thought would correct it, but it backfired. Quite spectacularly. The good thing is that his intellect remains unaffected.

Not fail--it's a logical code name considering his powers! Just thought I'd give a heads-up, though.

XD XD

[identity profile] lynxgriffin.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, really? I had heard that the serum was actually supposed to unlock secondary mutant abilities, so it did work, just not in the way he expected. But it's comics continuity, so who knows. @_@ (I do remember he was a smart kid no matter what!)

I AM DOWN WITH THIS PLAN

Hi ^.^ This is Aimi... from the artists gathering at AX many, many years ago. lol
I know we've only met in person, like... once, but since you're looking for suggestions on self publishing comics, I'd like to throw in my input too.

I recommend Comixpress.com. Their customer service is pretty good, and they have an online store right on their website so if you wait long enough, they'll list you in their store as well. They are based in New Jersey, and can print from digital files on CD or uploaded onto their server.

In terms of self marketing... I'm not very good at doing that myself, so it ends up with my friends telling other people that I write & draw comics. So... making friends and getting more and more people to know that you do this stuff serves as good advertising. A great quote from a between-jobs ministry I went to that I think can apply to any situation: "Networking is building mutually beneficial relationships." (with emphasis on italicized words.)

Hope that helps!
Good luck on your self-publishing gig!

Heyas! Yeah, I totally remember you from there! ;) Man I miss everyone from that AX meeting. And thanks for the suggestion! I'll keep that company in mind, too. And yeah, the marketing thing makes me think getting an agent would be a good idea, but that's also tough to do. @_@

Thankees! Will probably post all over here whenever I get a good print option. XD

Heh, good point. Maybe potions are more like...asprins? But you'd figure people needed food more than potions around this universe!

Yeah, I had forgotten about the pushing the junk together just by running into it.
