I...am not really sure what to think about this one. I didn't like it per se, but I didn't dislike it either. It was a little like Evangelion in that you feel better for having watched it, but don't necessarily feel good.

It was like a fever-dream hodgepodge version of 1984 (or perhaps a satire of 1984, but I don't know if that was the case or not). Considering it was made in the 80s, it seems even more relevant for today than for 30 years ago...all this stuff to say about the complications of technology, impossible societal standards and society's focus on the trivial, being smothered by beauracracy, terrorism and the establishment, classism, and just random chance. And all of it's shown through surrealist, heavily-symbolic dreamlike storytelling. I'm pretty certain I'd have to watch it again several times to get all the stuff I'm missing, and I also get the sense I might laugh more at it if I watched it again.

It was funny how Sam's dream world almost made more sense than the real world, at least until the ending when everything all kind of collided together and you then discovered that he'd been tortured to death and was just lost in the dream world completely. The normal world was surreal in so many ways, from this overabundance of tubes everywhere to the steampunkish machinery to the creepy plastic surgery society his mother belonged to. Maybe if I watch this again I should with someone else, since this movie was just so weird it'd be easier to get through it with help. @_@

LOL I think they have, cause I can't recall AkuRoku being as bad recently as it was then, and the fankiddies have been tame lately. Days might have been strangely good for internet sanity. We'll find out next week!
