The program I used for this one is AfterEffects, but that can seem confusing and monsterish from the get-go since it does so many different things. If you've got a mac, I'd say just start with iMovie, which will come with the mac anyway. It's a great starter program for AMVs...easy to use, and can put out some real high-quality stuff given that it's a comes-with-the-comp program. The only problem with iMovie is that you need to make sure that you're using compatible clips with the program... .mov is the best to use since movs are high quality anyway; iMovie won't accept things like .wmv or other Windows-only formats.
