Actually, blackface was considered an art form in theater all the way up through...oh, the thirties, I think. Since they wouldn't actually let black performers onstage, they would oftentimes get a white man or woman in blackface to perform a part. Quite a few performers in variety shows became famous for their blackface acts.

So yes, back then, it was art and the norm. |D /learned from that Stage Dance class whut
