It'll probably take a while to develop an alternative that burns as efficiently as petroleum without screwing us over in some other aspect, so the gov. needs to do something to keep the prices from manhandling our wallets in the meantime.
I wouldn't put my blame entirely on the oil companies though, since OPEC is the one artificially jacking up the prices by not refining near as much as they could/should.
