Kid is from sort turn of the century (20th century, damn I feel old now) and family was high society thing, but his father was ... well, not from that time. He was from a group of scientists that could manipulate time. He did experiments on his kids--and as a result, "Shiz" (Sean) is able to manipulate time naturally, without the use of machines/science.etc.
