Word's spellchecker has always sucked. There was an incident ten years back, for instance, when formal letters going out from Department of State offended some diplomats because Word autocorrected Cyprus to cypress without being asked. The next version of Word had autocorrect defaulting to "off." I imagine these two things are related.
